Mapping Earth's Water Cycle With NASA Scientists
[03-Oct-14] There are a number of NASA satellites currently in orbit whose missions are to study various Earth System processes. Among them are two that are currently allowing scientists to better understand changes in Earth's water cycle: the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite, which collects global sea surface salinity data and the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) mission, measuring variations in Earth's gravity field. On Thursday, October 16, join us online as we hear from two scientists directly involved with these missions, both of whom are based at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California: Jorge Vazquez, NASA PO.DAAC scientist and J.T. Reager, research scientist in the Water and Carbon Cycles Group. Through the use of concept mapping, these scientists will explain how data from each satellite is collected and what it means for scientists currently studying changes in the global water cycle. With the help of two case studies, we will also learn how these data from these missions can be used collaboratively to observe and explain extreme events, such as floods.
