2015 Aquarius/SAC-D/Ocean Salinity Science Team Meeting Scheduled
[24-Sep-15] In the wake of the loss of Aquarius/SAC-D in early June, the Principal Investigators and Program Scientists have decided to proceed with convening an Aquarius/SAC-D science meeting in Buenos Aires, 17-19 November 2015 (Tues, Weds, Thurs). Our objectives for the science team meeting are to review the many ongoing and concluding Aquarius and SAC-D science projects and to survey the development of ocean research in the South Atlantic in terms of observing systems, models, products, and services. The agenda will allot approximately one day each to SAC-D, Aquarius and South Atlantic studies.

Date: 17-19 November 2015 (Tues, Weds, Thurs)

Location: Buenos Aires

Call for Abstracts: Abstracts should be submitted before 19 October 2015

Meeting Objectives: Review the many ongoing and concluding Aquarius and SAC-D science projects, and to survey the development of ocean research in the South Atlantic in terms of observing systems, models, products, and services. The agenda will allot approximately one day each to SAC-D, Aquarius and South Atlantic studies.

Registration: This event has now concluded.

Sessions:

SAC-D: The general objectives for SAC-D are progress review and closure of the SAC-D investigations (selected in 2009). This would include the ones with collaboration with US investigators, and expectations that those collaborators would attend. The results of different data and product applications from general users, products access, algorithms progresses and EPO activities will be presented.

Aquarius: The Aquarius mission ended in June 2015 after accumulating 3 years and 9 months of global sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements. The goal of this workshop is to assess the science accomplishments and consider the science objectives for sustained observations in the future with the Aquarius record as a foundation. Data Version 4.0 was released in June, and computing V5.0 is the project's principal science objective for the next 21 months. V5.0 will be the concluding data release by the Aquarius Project, and is intended to be the best product we can provide with our present understanding of the calibration and geophysical corrections. The plans and schedule of this data reprocessing will be described. Abstracts are solicited to present results on science investigations, data analysis, modeling and assimilation, calibration and validation, process studies. Science results from SMOS mission are also welcome.

South Atlantic: NASA and CONAE have decided to commission one day of the meeting for general discussion of the topic "Observing the South Atlantic - for Science and Society." Our dual objectives for the science team meeting are to review the many ongoing and concluding Aquarius and SAC-D science projects and to survey the development of oceanography in the South Atlantic in terms of observing systems, models, products, and services. There has been much development over the last 5 years in observing the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and its impact on climate. We intend to focus on recent developments in the South Atlantic and prospects for further international collaboration in the next five years.
